There's a moment during Durga Puja that anyone who has experienced it will recognise. The dhak starts beating, the smoke from the dhunuchi fills the pandal, and suddenly you're surrounded by a sea of white and red sarees. It's one of the most beautiful sights in India, and it never stops giving us goosebumps.
The white and red saree, especially the Bengali laal paad, is more than an outfit. It's tradition, devotion and celebration woven together. In this post, we'll talk about why this colour combination matters, and share a few ways to style it so your look feels both classic and personal.
Why white and red for Durga Puja?
Red is the colour of Maa Durga herself. It represents shakti, strength, fertility and auspicious beginnings. White represents purity and peace. Together they balance each other perfectly: calm and power, gentleness and courage.
On Vijaya Dashami, married Bengali women take part in Sindoor Khela, smearing sindoor on each other and on the goddess as she's bid farewell. The white and red saree is almost a uniform for this day, and the photos that come out of it are some of the most iconic images of the festival.

Traditional White Saree with Red Lakshmi Charan & Shloka Print
Five ways to style your white and red saree
1. The traditional Bengali look
Drape your saree in the Aatpoure style, the traditional Bengali drape with box pleats and the pallu brought over the right shoulder, often with a bunch of keys tied at the end. Pair it with a red blouse, a big round red bindi, alta on your feet, shankha-pola bangles and a large gold jhumka. A low bun with a white flower finishes the look.
2. Modern minimal
Drape in the regular Nivi style with an open pallu. Choose a white or ivory sleeveless blouse, a slim gold chain and small studs. Keep makeup fresh with a red lip. Perfect for pandal-hopping with friends, when you'll be walking for hours.
3. Contrast blouse twist
Try a black, deep green or mustard blouse with your white and red saree. It instantly makes the look feel fresh and personal. A black blouse with oxidised silver jewellery is especially striking.
4. Puja morning look
For Anjali in the morning, keep it simple and respectful. A three-quarter sleeve red cotton blouse, small gold earrings, a bindi and loosely braided hair. Mulmul is especially comfortable here, since you'll be standing, sitting on the floor, and moving through crowds.
5. Evening glam
For the evenings, go bolder. Pair a red brocade or embroidered blouse, statement temple jewellery and a deep kohl eye. Add a red potli and you're ready for the dhunuchi naach.
Our pick: the Lakshmi Charan and Shloka saree
If you'd like a white and red saree that feels a little different from the classic laal paad, our Lakshmi Charan and Shloka print saree is a beautiful option. The tiny goddess footprints and printed shlokas carry a quiet spiritual meaning, and the bold red border keeps it rooted in tradition. Because it's mulmul, it stays light and comfortable from morning Anjali to late-night pandal-hopping.
Practical tips for pandal-hopping in a saree
- Wear comfortable flats. You'll walk far more than you expect.
- Pin your pallu securely, as crowds can be intense.
- Carry a small crossbody bag so your hands stay free for prasad and photos.
- Choose cotton over synthetics. October nights can still be humid, and crowded pandals get warm.
- If you're playing Sindoor Khela, wear a saree you don't mind getting a little colour on. Sindoor washes out of cotton more easily than silk.
Caring for your saree after Puja
After Sindoor Khela, soak the stained area in cold water with a little mild detergent as soon as you can. Don't use hot water, as it can set the stain. Wash gently by hand and dry in the shade. We'll be sharing a detailed care guide later in this series.
Whether you're Bengali or simply love the energy of Durga Puja, the white and red saree is a timeless choice. We hope you wear yours with pride and joy this season. Shubho Pujo!
