Some sarees are just pretty. Others carry a feeling. Our Traditional White Saree with Red Lakshmi Charan and Shloka Print is very much the second kind, and it has quietly become one of the most loved pieces in our collection.
People often message us asking what the little footprints mean, or what's written along the border. So today, we wanted to share the story behind this saree, why we made it, and how you can wear it.

Traditional White Saree with Red Lakshmi Charan & Shloka Print
What are Lakshmi Charan?
If you grew up in an Indian home, especially in Bengal, Odisha, Maharashtra or the South, you've probably seen tiny footprints drawn at the entrance during Diwali or Lakshmi Puja. These are Lakshmi Charan, or Lakshmi Paduka, the footprints of Goddess Lakshmi. They are drawn walking into the house, as an invitation for the goddess of wealth, prosperity and well-being to enter and stay.
In many families, the women of the house draw these with rice paste or alta. Our grandmothers did it with their fingers, carefully, one small step at a time. It's one of those rituals that feels deeply personal, even though millions of homes do it together.
And the shloka?
Along with the footprints, the saree carries printed shlokas, sacred Sanskrit verses. In Indian tradition, shlokas aren't just words. They're believed to carry vibration and blessing. Wearing them is a little like carrying a prayer with you through the day.
We chose verses that feel calm and auspicious, the kind you'd hear during a morning puja at home. The script becomes part of the design itself, adding texture and rhythm to the fabric.
Why white and red?
White and red together is one of the oldest colour pairings in Indian dressing. Think of the Bengali laal paad saree worn during Durga Puja, or the white and red sarees women wear for weddings and pujas across the country. White stands for purity and peace. Red stands for shakti, energy and auspiciousness. Together, they feel both festive and serene.
We wanted to create something that honoured this tradition but was soft and easy enough to wear for long hours, which is why we printed it on cotton mulmul instead of a heavier fabric.
How the saree is made
The design started as sketches of the charan motif in different sizes, which we then arranged so the footprints appear to "walk" across the fabric. The red is a deep, warm shade chosen to stay rich after washing. The border is kept bold and confident, so the saree looks beautiful even with a very simple blouse.
Because it's mulmul, the saree is incredibly light. You can wear it for a four-hour puja, cook the bhog, serve guests and still feel fresh.

When to wear it
- Diwali and Lakshmi Puja: The most natural occasion, of course.
- Durga Puja: A modern alternative to the classic laal paad look.
- Griha pravesh: Perfect for a housewarming, when you're literally welcoming Lakshmi into a new home.
- Temple visits: Simple, respectful and comfortable.
- Festive office days: It's understated enough for work but still clearly festive.
How to style it
Traditional: A plain red blouse, a red bindi, sindoor if you wear it, gold or shell bangles, and a simple bun with a white jasmine gajra.
Modern: A white or black sleeveless blouse, a statement silver choker, and open hair. Add a red potli bag to tie it together.
Minimal: A three-quarter sleeve red cotton blouse, small gold jhumkas, and kohl. Nothing more. Let the print speak.
A saree that makes a meaningful gift
Many of our customers buy this saree for their mothers, mothers-in-law or a newly married bride in the family. There's something special about gifting a saree that literally carries blessings in its design. It says more than "Happy Diwali" ever could.
A little note from us
When we first shared this saree, a customer wrote to us saying it reminded her of her grandmother drawing footprints at their doorstep in Kolkata. That message stayed with us. It's exactly why we make sarees like this. Not just to look good, but to carry memories and traditions forward in a way that fits how we live today.
